Benoa Marina Berthing Guide: Moorings, Fees and Charter Pickups

Benoa is Bali’s working yacht harbour — the enclosed bay south of Denpasar where the island’s marina berths, fuel dock, clearance officials and most weekly charter departures concentrate. For guests it is a 20-minute airport transfer; for vessels it is the only full-service stop between Singapore and Australia’s north. This guide covers how berthing and moorings actually work, and how pickups run for charters booked through the Bali departures hub.

Berth, mooring or anchor: the three options

Swing mooringPhinisi, mid-size yachtsUSD 15–50/day bandAgent-arranged; tender to shore

Fee bands move with vessel size and season; treat the table as orientation and get current numbers through your agent — quotes in writing are standard practice here.

Approach and harbour notes

The approach channel is dredged and buoyed but busy: fast ferries to Nusa Penida, fuel barges, and the cruise wharf all share it, and the outer bay shoals quickly off the channel edges. Tidal range runs to 2.5 metres — the reason Serangan’s shallower entrance next door takes only day boats. VHF coordination with the harbourmaster is routine, and clearance formalities (domestic port clearance; international on departure to points east) run through agents in a day when papers are in order — the national process is the same one described in the clearance procedures page.

How charter pickups actually work

Three patterns cover nearly every booking. Marina boarding: guests walk the dock to the passerelle — standard for motor yachts and superyachts. Tender pickup from the marina steps or the Benoa jetty — standard for phinisi lying on moorings or at anchor; luggage goes ahead by crew tender. And Serangan boarding for day catamarans: drive-to-beach, board by ramp or shallow tender. In every pattern the operator confirms the exact pickup point and time the day before; the only guest job is matching the named jetty. Airport-to-deck inside an hour is normal when flights land on time.

Fuel, provisioning and the departure rhythm

Benoa’s fuel dock and bunker barges make it the fleet’s tank-up stop, and the surrounding city is Indonesia’s best provisioning ground — the reason weekly charters to Komodo and beyond depart Saturday mornings after a Friday of loading. If your itinerary begins with a crossing (Lombok Strait to the Gilis or the long eastbound line), expect an early departure timed to the strait’s tide rather than a leisurely brunch — the routing logic laid out in the route planner’s Bali legs. It is the price of the only harbour in Bali that does everything.

Beyond the berth: Benoa as a route hub

Benoa’s deeper value to a charter is what radiates from it. Within a day’s sail: Nusa Penida’s manta stations and the Lembongan channel anchorages westward via the Badung Strait, and the Lombok Strait crossing to the Gilis eastward on the tide. Within a week: the full Bali–Gili–Sumbawa chain, or the one-way repositioning line to Labuan Bajo that most Komodo charters ride. And within the season: every eastbound expedition in the country effectively begins here, because Benoa is where vessels take their last full-service load — fuel dock, bonded stores, provisioning at import grade, spares flown into DPS overnight. That hub function shapes guest planning too: parties connecting from international flights build a buffer night in Nusa Dua or Sanur rather than gambling on same-day boarding, and depart the marina in morning light with the strait’s tide.

The harbour’s rhythms are worth knowing: cruise-ship days crowd the wharf road (your agent will know the schedule), Friday loading makes Saturday the fleet’s departure morning, and the marina’s berths turn over fastest in July–August when the whole eastbound season funnels through. None of it is Monaco — and that is its charm: Benoa is a working Indonesian harbour that happens to run the country’s best yacht logistics.

Practical notes for Benoa calls

  • Berth booking: two to four weeks ahead in peak months; agents hold options against arrival windows.
  • Clearance: full CIQP on-site — the fastest international processing in the country with an agent engaged.
  • Fuel: dock and barge options; bonded fuel for departing international yachts by arrangement.
  • Provisioning: Bali’s importers deliver dockside; 48 hours’ notice for specialty and dietary orders.
  • Transfers: 20 minutes from the airport outside rush hours; allow 45 in the evening peak.
  • Tide note: Lombok Strait departures time to the south-going stream — morning slots most of the season.

Read as infrastructure, Benoa is Indonesia’s charter keystone: the one harbour where everything works, positioned exactly where every great route begins.

Quick answers

Can visiting yachts berth at Benoa?

Yes — marina berths at Bali Marina and ONE°15 for motor yachts, agent-arranged swing moorings for phinisi, and bay anchorage for short stays. July–August berths should be booked well ahead.

How do charter guests board at Benoa?

Either directly at the marina dock, or by crew tender from the marina steps when the vessel lies on a mooring. Operators confirm the exact jetty and time the day before departure.

Why do charters depart Benoa rather than Serangan?

Benoa has the depth, fuel dock, clearance officials and provisioning for multi-day vessels; Serangan’s shallow entrance suits day catamarans only.
